Purple Martin
  Date: October 28, 2003

Pur around 5 Purple Martins were seen at 5.15 pm on Saturday 25.10. 2003 at ~km 71.

They were all female colored. Some individuals rather glossy bluish above, but white on abdomen. Collar and pale forehead obvious on all individuals. Too late to take any good photos, but I will see what comes out. It would be good to age and sex these, as I still have not seen any males. Different migration patterns for the sexes? G. Engblom, A. Knue, A. Clark, D. Jackson, S. Butler, D. Herter (Kolibri Expeditions)

Also on Oct 28, ALejandro Tello reports about 15 Purple Martin at Pantanos de Villa.

So why this big deal about Purple Martins? Well, it was only a couple of years ago that Purple Martin was discovered in Lima, but it seems they are regular this time of year (September-October), but mostly females/immatures. From Ecuador there are male purple martins recorded as early as August. In Ecuador they se mostly all blue/black males.
