New species to Peru in
  Date: June 10, 2005

On June 2, 2005 Gunnar Engblom, Kolibri Expeditions saw and taped Ochre-cheeked Spinetail (Synallaxis scutatus) at Yuramayo north of San Juan del Oro, Puno department at 1150 meters. This is the first record for Peru. The area is highly interesting for birding in spite that there are many chacras (cultivated plots) and access to really prisitine forest is limited.
From the vicinity several new species for Peru have been recorded recently. Yungas Tody-Tyrant is common and this was seen as well by Gunnar. Bolivan Recurvebill, Yungas (Ashy) Antwren, the new Phyllomyias Tyrannulet from Bolivia known as Pilon (or Yungas) Tyarannulet and possibly also Black-capped Antwren have all been recorded recently. It is not unlikely that the splendid Swallow-tailed Cotinga will be found if more investigation is done.
Other star attractions in the region is the Endemic (well almst since it has recently been found in Bolivia) Green-capped Tanager in Sandia and the cloud forest of Abra Maruncunca that holds the rare Scimitar-winged Piha.
Kolibri Expedition is setting up a new itinerary to the area that can easily be combined with a trip to Machu Picchu.
