WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

 Birding Arequipa and surroundings (Arequipa).

The surroundings of Arequipa, a big-sized town on the dry west slope, offers some very good birding in different habitats. The most famous site around here is the Colca Canyon, 4 hrs from Arequipa, where Andean Condors are seen at eye-level. There are many tour operators in Arequipa offering trips here to see Condors. Many other high-altitude species occurs around here as well, like Dark-winged-, Canyon- and Cordilleran Canasteros. Diademed Sandpiper-plover and White-throated Sierra-finch has been seen nearby.

Above Arequipa is the small village Chiguata and higher up Laguna de Salinas. Just after passing through Chiguata one can start birding the scrub for birds like White-throated and Straight-billed Earthcreepers and Canasteros. Plain-breasted Earthcreeper is common here as well. Higher up there are some dry polylepis forest and this should not be missed as it holds Giant and Tamarugo Conebills as well as Andean Hillstar, Andean Tit-tyrant and Black Siskin. Continuing uphill the vegetation gets more and more sparse and gives way to puna grassland. Ground-tyrants and Sierra-finches takes over the scene and Orante Tinamou is here too. Once up at the high plateau you will see lake Salinas, which is a salt-lake at 4300 m. Take it easy up here! The lake is very shallow and often dried out. When it has water all three Flamingos can be seen here alongside Andean Avocet and Puna Plovers. During migration other waders roosts here too. The short grass and tussocks along the shore should be checked for canasteros and finches.

Traveling down to the coast from Arequipa takes you through some nice loma habitat where birds like Grayish and Thick-billed Miners can be seen and also Raimondi´s Yellow-finch. Once down by the coast you are almost at the Mejia Wetlands. This is a size-able wetland with several observation towers. There is a visitor centre where you pay a small fee. The various pools holds the usual wetland birds. This is the most reliable place in Peru to see Red-fronted Coot. Black Rail has a population here too but is hard to see. Least Bittern and Cinereous Harrier are other birds to look for as well as migrating waders. The scrub and bushes holds Slender-billed Finches and Pied-crested Tit-tyrants.
