WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Birding Carpish - Paty trail (Huánuco).

These sites are along the Central Highway about 1 hour east of Huanuco. It is a spectacular drive from Huanuco in the dry rain-shadowed valley eastwards. As you approach the Carpish tunnel it gets more humid and on the east side of the tunnel you see a big valley with beautiful wet, subtropical rainforest.

Before coming to the tunnel one should check the patches of scrub along the road for Brown-flanked Tanager. Just past the tunnel there is a track to the left that can be walked. Along here are some flocks with the usual mixture of species. Unstreaked Tit-tyrant, Bay Antpitta, Slaty Finch, Rufous-browed Hemispingus, a variety of tanagers and hummingbirds are also present and with luck Black-and-chestnut Eagle is possible here. Birding along the road downhill from the tunnel can be rewarding with the same species and also Masked Saltator, Gray-breasted Mountain-toucan, Barred Parakeet and Plush-capped Finch.

5 kms down the road from the tunnel is the famous Paty trail to the left. There are some roadside stalls and a school here so ask for the trail head. The habitat along the trail is now very degraded but still birding is excellent here with a whole range of possibilities. The following is just a small sample. Sword-billed Hummingbird, Large-footed Tapaculo, Rusty-breasted and Chestnut Antpittas, Masked Saltator, Masked and Band-tailed Fruiteaters, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Golden-browed Chat-tyrant, Peruvian Tyrannulet and good flocks with many species of tanagers and furnarids. It is possible to camp by the school or comute from Huanuco (1.5 hrs). This site warrants for at least two full days birding.
