WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

 Birding Jaen and surroundings (Cajamarca).

Jaen makes a good stop between Chiclayo and Abra Patricia.  A couple of kilometers outsider of town there is a dirt road to the left up to a priest seminar  with some scrubby areas on the way good for Marañon endemics such as Peruvian Slaty-Antshrike, Spot-throated Hummingbird and Chinchipe Spinetail. Other birds include Blue-Ground-Dove and Tataupa Tinamou -both common by voice.  Marañon Crescentchest used to be easy to call out here, but recently we have had better luck up the hill across the road from the turn-off to Tabaconas further north (this road is being paved). The best place for the elusive Marañon Spinetail is driving for some 30 minutes-1 hour on the dirt road towards Tabaconas. Just stop where there is intact habitat with good understory. A tape will help, but intensive pishing may also do the trick. In the rice-fields close to Jaen one may look for Comb Duck, Paint-billed Crake, and Spotted Rail. Much further north in the vicinity of San Ignacio Paynter´s Brush-Finch has recently been found.
The Tabaconas-Namballe reserve would be the place in Peru where to look for the recently described Jocotoco Antpita, as well as for instance Neblina Metaltail, Bearded Guan and Hooded Mountain-Tanager.
