WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

Birding Junín lake and surroundings (Junín).

Lake Junin is the second largest lake in Peru and at high altitude (4100 m). This lake is home to two rare peruvian endemics, Junin Grebe and Rail. Lake Junin is the only site for these birds. The Grebe can be seen from the shore just past Ondores about half an hour northwest of Junin town. It has to be high water levels in the lake otherwise the grebes are out in the open lake and not viewable from the shore. One then have to arrange with a boat to take you out to the lake. The rail is even more difficult to see but can be seen along the shores when the water level is high. Even without these two birds, the lake and it´s surroundings offers very good birding with a range of wetland birds as well as high altitude birds. In the lake and marshes birds like White-tufted Grebe, Silvery Grebe, Chilean Flamingo, Cinereous Harrier, Puna Snipe and Puna Plover occurs. Wren-like Rush-bird and Many-coloured Rush-tyrants are common in the reeds. In the drier puna grassland two other peruvian endemics can be found - Dark-winged Miner and Black-breasted Hillstar. Other birds here includes Andean Swallow, Andean Flicker, Short-billed and Correndera Pipits, Andean Negrito and Bright-rumped Yellow-finch.
