WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

 Birding La Montañita (La Libertad).

La Montañita near Buldibuyo is one of the most exciting birding experiences in Peru. The cover species of newly published Birds of Peru - Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager is frequently seen here. Many other threatened and endemic birds are specialties of this area. It should be possible in the near future to access areas for the endemic Yellow-browed Toucanet on a newly cut trail to the subtropics with a completely different set of birds. Few ornithologists have seen this species in the last 20 years and it has certainly not been seen by any bird groups before. The higher areas hold peruviana race of White-chinned Thistletail (a potential split), Line-fronted Canastero and Coppery Metaltail. Further down but still in the border zone between the temperate forest and paramo Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager, Bay-vented Cotinga, Pardusco and Rufous-browed Hemispingus occurs. The different altitudinal levels have different birds. The next sections include gems like Yellow-scarfed, Golden-naped and Orange-breasted Tanagers, Hooded, Buff-breasted, Scarlet-bellied and Lachrymose Mountain-Tanagers, skulkers like Peruvian Wren, schulenbergi-race (potential split) of Plain-tailed Wren  and Rufous Spinetail and mixed species flock species with birds like Russet-mantled Softtail, Black-capped, Drab and White-bellied Hemispingus and Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant.
Lower down one often hear Pale-billed Antpitta and Large-footed Tapaculo, both being a challange to also try to see. Here one also sees birds like Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Andean Guan and Peruvian Tyrannulet. Flocks of the threatened Golden-plumed Parakeet often patrol the area.
Montañita is just south of Abiseo National Park and shares the same avifauna. In the subtropical area the threatened and endemic Yellow-tailed Wolly Monkey also persists.

La Montañita is best reached by air to Chagual or Piaz and with pre-arranged transport waiting at the airport. The Trujillo-Huamachuco road is currently being paved and this will cut considerbly in overland access time to Montañita.
Good for the forest, but bad for access the bridges along the access road to Montañita from Buldibuyo are in very poor shape and were not possible to pass in 2006. One would have to hike in from Buldibuyo
The overland route from Chimbote, via Sihuas and Tayabamba can not be recommended due to immense distance on a poor road, road bandits and Sendero Luminoso (Shining path) terrorists still present.
