WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

Birding Paracas, Nazca, Punta San Juan, San Fernando (Ica) y Pampas Galeras (Ayacucho).

Pisco and Paracas are just off the panAmerican Highway some 300 kms south of Lima by the coast. The Paracas bay normally have some Peruvian Terns flying around and other gulls and terns can be seen here as well. The Paracas peninsula is a national park and an entrance fee has to be paid. On the west side of the peninsula there is a visitor centre and an observation tower. During migration many waders gather here and Chilean Flamingoes are usually present. In the bay Great Grebes can be seen. You can continue further out onto the peninsula on dirt tracks to places like Lagunillas and la Cathedral. There are some restaurants here and birds like Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes, Humboldt Penguin and Surfbird can be seen here. There is also a chance of seabirds like Shearwaters and Storm-petrels coming close to the shore.

Driving north from Paracas towards Pisco offers very good viewing places for waders, especially around the little village San Andres. Thousands of waders can be seen here just a few metres from the road. Rarities like Marbled Godwit have been seen here.

North of Pisco is Pisco Marshes at the mouth of river Pisco. Some wetlands and pools here offers a nice selction of wetland birds . In the bushes the coastal race of Bran-coloured Flycatcher can be found and in the drier parts Peruvian Thick-knee and Short-tailed Field-tyrant. Be aware that safety is a serious problem here and it is not adviceable to go here alone. Islas de Ballestas off Paracas can be visited as part of general tourist trips. A wide range of trips to Islas de Ballestas are on offer in Paracas. Besides seeing Fur-seals and Sea Lions, you have a chance of seeing the odd open-water seabird like Peruvian Diving-petrel, Markham´s Storm-petrel and Sooty Shearwaters. With luck the odd Waved Albatross or petrel can be seen too. To see seabirds it is better to arrange a pelagic in Paracas or go on the regular pelagics off Lima which also uses chum to attract the birds.
