WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

Birding Sandia, Abra Maruncunca and Limbani

Another Peruvian endemic found in Puno dept is Green-capped Tanager which occurs near the village Sandia which is very remote on a poor road. Once at Sandia the Tanager is easily found in the scrub near the village. In the next valley north near Limbani, is where an undescribed form of Puna Thistletail occurs. If going this far you might as well continue past Sandia to reach some forest at Maruncunca. A more typical set of east slope subtropical birds can be found here including rare birds like Scimitar-winged Piha, Olive-tufted Flycatcher, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, Unadorned Flycatcher and Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater are just some of the highlights here. The flocks include birds like Pale-legged warbler (flavovirens race), Black-eared Hemispingus , Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager (flavinuchus ssp with all blue rump),Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher, Andean Solitaire, Bolivian Tapaculo, White-winged Black-Tyrant and Yungas Manakin. Both the marcapatae race of Rufous-capped Antshrike and Variable Antshrike are here.

Past San Juan del Oro look out for Yungas Tody-Tyrant and  Ochre-cheeked Spinetail both recently added to the Peruvian list, as well as Upland Antshrike, Streak-necked Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Fawn-breasted Tanager, Two-banded Warbler, Inca Jay and Plain Antvireo.

Almost at the end of the road is Curva Alegre which is the start of the Lanza trail. This trail continues to Bolivia. Three new species for Peru have been added on this trail namely Bolivian Recurvebill, Pilon Tyrannulet (a not yet described Phyllomyias) and Yungas Antwren. The bamboo also holds Rufous-headed Woodpecker and Dusky-cheeked Foliagegleaner.
