WHERE TO GO BIRDING IN PERU

Back To Map >>

 Birding Trujillo and surroundings

Trujillo, situated between the North and South is not recieving as much attention. Few birders have spent a lot of time here, but the town is on many routes that explore the archeological treasures of Peru with Moche and Chan Chan being the most famous sites. Not far from Trujillo is Salaverry, where cruise ships usually stay to visit the archeological sites.

There are a few wetlands that can be visited, but we have little data what is there. There are at least three sites with Propis woodland, holding the threatened Peruvian Plantcutter and the endemic Rufous Flycatchcer. These are Algarrobal-San Benito north of town, Viru and Chao south of town. All also hold an undescribed form of Necklaced Spinetail.

It is however, the recently discovered site (mentioned in Valqui's book) Sinsicap that have gained most attention from birders the last couple of years.
This is an alternative site to San Damian for Piura Chat-Tyrant and Russet-bellied Spinetail. The new hummingbird Valqui is mentioning from this area is the west slope form of Speckled Hummingbird, better known in Ecuador. The apparantly same form have also been found at Porculla pass in 2005.

From Trujillo there is a direct road to Huamachuco, home of the famous Peruvian national poet - Cesar Vallejo. Huamachuco is a good place to break the journey if you are continuing to El Molino for Purple-backed Sunbeam.
Just outside of Huamachuco on the road to El Molino just at the turnoff to Cajabamba, there is a large marge that hold some species typical to the Andean wetland. Blackish Rail is quite easy to see here.
