A recent paper by Arndt in Journal of Ornitholgy introduces two new subspecies. The northern form chlorogenys occurs between Amazonas and Junin. From Apurimac to Puno it is mitrata. The third subspecies is tucumana from Argentina.
The previous subspecies alticola is raised to a new species Chapman´s Mitred Parakeet. Additionally, Arndt describes a new species Hocking´s Parakeet Aratinga hockingi which is seasonally sympatric with chlorogenys in the Utcubamba valley.
